  CAMP DESCRIPTIONS:

NEW! The Apprentice Atelier!
This is a new series in the studio. So if you have have come to art camp before this might just be what you are looking for.  In this camp, kids will study the life of an amazing Master Artist. Campers will complete projects centered around the artists life, create art the way the artist might have done, using similar tools and mediums. There is no better way to understand an artist than to create like them.
AND there is no better way to start this series than with one of my favorite artists, Van Gogh.

NEW! Paths and Purpose
What path are you on? Do you have a map? Where will your journey take you? In this camp kids will explore who they are in Christ and complete several projects having to do with identity and purpose. I want each camper to understand that they are able to re-orient their lives with the right tools and our Big God! Good Stuff!

NEW! Camp Creation!
I have been wanting to do this camp for a while now and can't wait! Campers will look to nature for inspiration, as well as, the Creation story. Being a maker of beauty is Biblical! Projects will center around the days of creation. "And God saw all that He had made and it was very good." Gen. 1:31

Last Day of Camp HeARTfull

Lesson #5: TRANSFORMATION

WOW! What a week it has been! I hope you can see the joy of learning and creating on these camper's faces. I have had such a blast with these wonderful kiddos!

On our last day together, we looked at the idea of being changed into a new creature! In our heartful bible time we looked at scriptures that talk of this very thing.  For example:

2 Cor. 5:17 tells us:Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 

On the board is ways in which to live out that transformation found in Romans 12:9-16

For our creative project we created specimen box butterflies. The campers had a great time creating their own beautiful butterflies as a representation of themselves and what happens when you give your life to Christ, you become a new creation alive this the Spirit of God living in you! Pretty awesome.  

We also shared our week with our parents with a mini art show. The perfect ending to Camp HeARTful. If you are interested in Camp HeARTful 2 contact me via this blog. 

Camp HeARTfull ~Day#4

Lesson #5: Freedom

Can't you hear the Braveheart Battle cry?Freeedooommmm!

In our heartful bible lesson today we discussed what it means to be enslaved to sin. I asked the campers what kinds of ways are people entangled in sin. Here again is a great word picture from the bible about  being enslaved to something.

 I just love the answers these sweet children gave me. Things like: bad attitudes (had to smile at that one lynn), rebellion, back talking, lying, stealing, rolling your eyes.

These campers also talked about what keeps them enslaved. But the best part, was that they wrote a small prayer in their journals asking Jesus to help them with whatever it was. Priceless!

For their art project we collaged a heart and stamped and painted then put Galatians 5:1 across our hearts, figuratively and literally.

Sneak Peek- Felting Sunflowers

I wanted to share a wee little preview of my upcoming Making Lessons Class on felting Sunflowers. This class really excites me because it is like painting with a fiber medium! Those who are joining me, you are going to love it and I know you will want to start felting everything in site! I hope this picture speaks for itself.

 I used this Van Gogh painting as my model.

This one Van Gogh finished in 1888. He painted it while he was in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhone, France.

And below is just a peek at my version done in needle felted wool. I love working with wool in the winter, something about it just seems cozy and right. Can you tell I have Vincent on the brain? I have been preparing for a painting class in my Master Studies Series, along with two workshops I am giving for girls of the American Heritage Girls Club which I am really excited about.

FYI: Making Lessons are stand alone, evening classes for anyone who loves to spend time learning and making new things. Come and be creative with like minded folks for a couple of hours and recharge your creative heart. All Classes run for 2 hours and include materials.  Some classes will require common tools from home. Registration is required you can do this easily online HERE

A New Space for The Apprentice Studio and Apprentice with the Masters Art Class

Have you ever had to do something you didn't like, in order to do something you do like? There are quite a few times in life that I can think of that are like that. Eating all your dinner, so you can have dessert. Cleaning up your room, in order to go out and play with friends. Weeding the garden, in preparation of planting seeds. For me, sometimes taking the time to sketch or draw my subject before I start painting can feel this way. 

These last couple of weeks have definitely felt this way. However, I am so glad that I did the hard stuff, because now, I get to do the fun stuff! What am I talking about, you ask? I have been preparing my studio space for the NEW The Apprentice Studio and my new art students! Packing and sorting, painting and designing, praying and dreaming. It has been worth it!

I am so excited that I have to share some of the process with you in hopes of getting you excited as well! Here are some pictures to show you what I have been up to.

Art of Gothic Lettering

As we are learning the Gothic hand during class time, I wanted to give you a couple of resources and examples for you to use, in case you do some work at home. This website is a wonderful site that walks you through each stroke of a letter (in red), very helpful if you get stuck. Visit HERE. I would encourage you to poke around this site there is lots of information about calligraphy in general there too.

As we get into letter art, we see how the talent of medieval scribes and modern day calligraphists bring the letters to life! Watch this video to see what I mean.

Here are some pictures of letter art I found on the internet. Aren't they just beautiful in and of themselves. Our project for our Book of Hours will consist of a longer writing,, perhaps a verse, and an illuminated letter at the beginning.  You will have to decide what kinds of elements you will include. Will it have a scene? Knot work, flourishes, flowers, creatures? Will you decorate the letter or leave it plain? Where will you paint your letter with gold? Hopefully, I have sparked your imagination and you will have some ideas for our class time.

Medieval Art and Another School Year Begins

As summer comes to a close, it is time to start thinking about art class again.  I am looking forward to this year's Medieval Art Class. This is a rich and important time in art and architecture, I can hardly wait! In case you were wondering about all the wonderful things we will be doing here is some but not all of what we will cover this year.

Students will learn  the importance of art in Europe during the middle ages.  Students will learn stitching, dyeing and the about the Bayeux Tapestry, illuminate a calligraphy project, the four hands of calligraphy and make a book of hours, learn about the "father of modern painting" and the importance of art in the church and medieval architecture, study stain glass, symbolism, and their role in the church. Students will study portrait art, egg tempera, and perspective from the Master, Leonardo Da Vinci.   It will be an exciting class! Students will be responsible for at least 1/2 hr. of study outside of class each week by reading teacher’s blog( check!), thinking through posted questions  and watching posted videos to prepare for class time. 

It is a good idea to start getting your art box together with all your common tools gathered from home.  Here is a list of what you should have in your box on the first day. 

Common Items and tools to Gather From Home for 2014-2015

 I will not be ordering these materials for students but students need to have these at the beginning of the year. Please include in your student’s art box. Students, please label supplies with name/initials. These items do not need to be new and can be what you have at home already or from last years pencil box. All these items are required for each student.

• 1 - Storage box of some kind (plastic storage box, shoe box with lid, canvas bag with Ziploc baggies inside) just some container to hold all art tools and supplies. One that student can easily carry to class and keep materials organized.*
• 2 - Pencils (regular #2 are fine)
• 1 - Scissors (good ones that will cut a variety of materials)
• 1 - Set of colored pencils 12 colors   OR   1- Set of color crayons (12 ct. )
• 2 - Glue sticks
• 1 - Black fine tip sharpie
• 1-Reg. tip sharpie-yes you will need both
• 1 - Small plastic container- ie: Glade Food Savers small size, with lid, that fits in box.
• 1 - Painter’s smock or apron or big t-shirt
• 1 – Ruler
• 1 – 1 ½ in. Binder
• 12- clear plastic sheet protectors
•  5 Page dividers labeled: Terms, Medieval, Asian, Renaissance, Calligraphy
• Tapestry needle-has large eye for threading wool thread& blunter point
• Sm. 6 or 12 in. embroidery hoop

*I have all my artist tools and materials in a big tool box from the hardware store.

Materials fee covers specialty materials for class time projects, copies fee, and other misc. supplies used to teach class.  I order it all during the summer for the beginning of the year. Each student will receive their individual materials on the first day of class.

** Students should come to art class with supply box every Monday we will use a variety of supplies during each class time.  Teacher will not have supplies on student supply list.

***Students it is also your responsibility to keep your supplies replenished when needed. If possible keep your art supplies separate from everyday school supplies**

Spring Break Challenge

Alright here is your Spring Break Challenge!  

This will earn you another museum art card and is a good way to catch up if you need another one too!

Your Challenge if you accept it, is to:

•  choose an ancient culture that we have studies so far 
•  choose an art technique we have done
•  choose an artifact from that culture as your model for your project. 
• choose the medium you use as well. 

WOW this opens up lots of possibilities, so use your imagination and get creative! You must bring in a picture of the model that you use so we can see the original work along side of yours! You have the month of April to accomplish this challenge. You must turn it in by the last week of April to get your card. I can't wait to see your work!

SO WHO IS UP FOR THE CHALLENGE???!!!!
